Spawn/Batman #1

Batman and Spawn meet in Todd McFarlane’s 1994 crossover cover. Trace the composition through later partnerships and tributes.

This catalog follows the original cover’s composition across published comics and announced editions. Trade dress, virgin, foil and sketch treatments are described in edition notes. Connecting sets identify their participating issues and panels.

Verified records have source support for the exact cover and target. Partial records retain attribution or edition gaps. Reprints, interior-scene homages, different targets and unresolved references are listed separately below.

Native 1036×1583 cover-only crop from 1064×1600 source; only exterior thin white scanner border removed, no enlargement/recoloring. Printed black surrounds and green frame are intentional cover design. Source edition database dates differ; April 1994 month retained rather than an unsupported exact day. Batman crouches/leaps above Spawn against lightning, framed in green on a black printed cover. Full trade dress, creator names, both character logos and bottom Image logo retained.

Research changes and source notes
  • CL-SPBAT1-0001: Cover homage

My Comic Shop credits cover Greg Hyland and publication November 1994; supplied December 1 date conflicts and is not repeated as certain. Exact cover parodies the two-character lightning composition. No alternate edition art mixed in.

  • CL-SPBAT1-0002: Cover homage

Adam Gorham Cover B and limited virgin use identical artwork and are grouped in one record. Regular issue release July 1 2020; limited virgin appeared on July 15 shipping list, so treatments need not share exact on-sale day. Sonja foreground; upper male with sword identity not securely resolved from cover-specific sources.

  • CL-SPBAT1-0003: Cover homage

New Capullo/Mc Farlane cover reverses original characters’ positions: Spawn above Batman. Original black framing and lightning composition echoed, not simply reused 1994 art. DC solicitation confirms April 4 2023 and both cover creators. Collected edition retained as a genuine new cover homage.

  • Spawn Hors-Série #1 (Semic1997): Not added

Same Mc Farlane/Taganashi original artwork in translation, not new homage art.

  • Batman/Spawn2022 variants and toys: Not added

Many target Batman 423, Spawn 300 or reproduce poses as merchandise; no additional exact 1994-composition comic safely established.
