The origin pointWonder Woman #72 · Brian Bolland

The original cover

Regal. Armed. Unforgettable.

Diana turns in profile with one foot raised, framed by a shield, spears, draped fabric and a golden helmet. Bolland’s composed warrior portrait gives the weapons and armor as much presence as the hero.

Brian Bolland penciled, inked and colored the cover. Wonder Woman #72 is cover-dated March 1993; GCD records January 14, 1993 as the on-sale date. William Messner-Loebs wrote The Song of Creation, with interior art by Lee Moder and Ande Parks.

Todd McFarlane transformed the composition for Angela’s debut on Spawn #9. That cover became a reference in its own right. This collection identifies direct Wonder Woman #72 homages and indirect descendants through Spawn #9 separately.

Research & upcoming · Reviewed October 12, 2026

From Diana to Angela and beyond.

The direct branch includes Spawn #9, Amelia Vidal’s Kirby’s Comics Power Rangers #37 exclusive and Rose Besch’s Wonder Woman anniversary cover. Hardlee Thinn, Immortal Red Sonja, Local Man and Rogue Sun reference Spawn #9 and are labeled as indirect descendants.

Convention editions: Besch’s virgin edition belongs to NYCC 2021, with 1,000 copies and a numbered NYCC-branded certificate. The related trade dress run is 2,000. Hardlee Thinn’s three Spawn #9 treatments were Amazing Comic Con Hawaii 2017 exclusives; its exact cover credit remains under research.

Upcoming: No additional future homage was confirmed. The September 23, 2026 Wonder Woman #72 facsimile is already published. Its standard and foil covers reproduce the original art; the blank and Super Powers covers do not add new #72 homage artwork.

Research scope: Publisher and retailer listings, artist portfolios, GCD, eBay, publicly indexed social posts, Reddit and convention references were reviewed. Jim Lee’s Batman #608 second printing and Superman #204 remain inspiration leads pending verification of the original book attribution. Other Bolland covers and unpublished commissions are excluded.
