Crime SuspenStories #22
Johnny Craig’s stark axe-and-head composition became a defining image of pre-Code horror. Follow its echoes through horror, superheroes and parody.
This catalog follows the original cover’s composition across published comics and announced editions. Trade dress, virgin, foil and sketch treatments are described in edition notes. Connecting sets identify their participating issues and panels.
Verified records have source support for the exact cover and target. Partial records retain attribution or edition gaps. Reprints, interior-scene homages, different targets and unresolved references are listed separately below.
Johnny Craig’s original 10¢ cover, April-May 1954; printed May in upper corner. Supplied LCG December 1953 date conflicts with independent university/GCD dating and is not carried forward. Native clean full-cover scan meets preferred resolution; mild edge wear retained.

New editions and open questions
As of 2026-10-19, new verified 2026 additions are already published: Mark Spears Monsters #0 Deluxe Cover C and Exquisite Corpses: Fox Mask Killer #1 Kevin Delgado exclusive. No independently verified future 2026/2027 CSS22 homage was found in this bounded search. Crow NYCC 2026 was inspected and rejected as a different composition.
Undisclosed print quantities, ambiguous credits and conflicting edition dates remain identified as unknown. This catalog can grow as publishers, artists and collectors provide new evidence.

- CL-CRIME22-0022: Cover homage
Creator store identifies CSS22 homage and limitation. GCD/ComicList says June 10; retailer solicited June 3 differs, so exact release date retains this uncertainty.
- CL-CRIME22-0023: Cover homage
Exclusive retailer explicitly identifies target and artist. Listing body mistakenly repeats Rascal Randy credits/date; use publisher issue metadata for underlying Fox Mask Killer #1 date, not copied product body.
- CL-CRIME22-0024: Cover homage
Second printing of the first issue; fresh homage cover rather than reuse of its first-print art. GCD attributes the signed art to Nathan Gooden; retailer additionally credits Tim Daniel without separating roles.
- The Crow: Dead Time — Mario Foccillo NYCC 2026 Black Saber exclusive: Exclude from CSS22 lineage
Exact red/blue trade and virgin native covers show standing Crow surrounded by birds. No severed-head/axe composition or Craig credit; recent product date does not establish a CSS22 homage.
- Catacomb of Torment #1 LCSD silver foil: Group as same-art edition under CL-CRIME22-0021
Silver-foil treatment reuses Jay Stephens drawing; retailer catalog reports 1,000 units. Not a fresh composition.
- Wolverine #55 signed/graded editions and original art auction: Group under CL-CRIME22-0002
Signature certificates, slabs and May 2026 original-art auction do not establish new comic artwork or a 2026 release. No substantiated recall found.
- Defective Comics trading card #17 Grime Suspensgories: Exclude from comic catalog
Trading card parody rather than a published comic cover edition.
- Jim Rugg CSS22 re-imagining original art: Exclude pending published edition evidence
Auction documents a standalone illustration, not a verified distributed comic edition.
