Artist Profile

A career in context

Tony S. Daniel is a comic-book writer and artist whose career includes both superhero assignments and creator-owned series. DC’s biography traces his return to comics in 2005 through Teen Titans with writer Geoff Johns. In 2007 he began drawing Batman with Grant Morrison, later taking on writing as well as art responsibilities. His DC work also includes Deathstroke, and he wrote and illustrated Detective Comics when the publisher launched its New 52 line.

Daniel’s writing and drawing roles have varied by project. He wrote The Savage Hawkman with artist Philip Tan, while Detective Comics allowed him to combine both disciplines. DC reported that Detective Comics Vol. 2: Scare Tactics reached number one on the New York Times hardcover graphic-books bestseller list in 2013. His creator-owned bibliography, identified by Image, includes The Tenth, Adrenalynn, F5 and Silke, alongside the later projects that brought him back to extended independent storytelling.

With writer Scott Snyder, Daniel co-created Nocterra, which launched at Image in March 2021. The series follows a truck driver transporting people through a world transformed by permanent darkness. Daniel subsequently wrote and drew Edenwood, a fantasy series about a war involving demons, witches and an unlikely young fighter. The first issue was published in October 2023. Together these projects demonstrate his continued work across collaborative visual storytelling and series he scripts himself.
