Artist Profile

A career in context

Steven Butler is a comic-book artist and creator with more than three decades of professional work. In his own account of his career, he lists Web of Spider-Man, Punisher War Journal and Silver Sable and the Wild Pack for Marvel; Superman for DC; Sonic the Hedgehog and Betty and Veronica for Archie; and The Badger for First Comics. His career therefore crosses superhero adventure, licensed characters and humor comics.

Butler has also developed an ongoing creative partnership with his daughter, artist Lily Butler. Their contributions are individually credited in Archie publications: Steven supplies pencils and Lily supplies inks on projects such as the 2024 Josie Annual Spectacular. In an Archie-published interview, Steven discussed the importance of working with Lily and his pride in their shared work for the publisher.

Alongside assignments for established publishers, Steven and Lily formed DUO Publishing for their own characters and stories. Butler’s creator-run Patreon describes a production process involving character designs, background sketches, page thumbnails, finished comic PDFs and drawing demonstrations. This independent work adds a creator-owned strand to a career otherwise widely represented by major publishers’ characters.
