Artist Profile
A career in context
Steve McNiven established a substantial comics career after first working in other professions. In a 2018 interview, he said that he began drawing comics professionally in his early thirties, taking a sabbatical from teaching to pursue the opportunity. His childhood introduction to drawing superheroes came from How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way, a gift from his father. His Marvel bibliography includes Civil War and Old Man Logan with Mark Millar, as well as Guardians of the Galaxy and Return of Wolverine.
McNiven has described the challenges of event storytelling in concrete terms. Looking back on Civil War, he identified learning to handle many characters on a page while preserving the principal story beats as a defining experience. His assignments have also taken him beyond superheroes: he illustrated a Roy Thomas story for King-Size Conan, a celebration of the character’s fifty-year Marvel history. That project paired him with the writer of the original Marvel Conan the Barbarian launch for a new prelude to that first story.
For Star Wars: War of the Bounty Hunters Alpha in 2021, McNiven reunited with Charles Soule and drew Boba Fett’s adventures. In a Lucasfilm interview, he demonstrated a process moving from rough layouts to finished inks, explaining that the issue was made by hand on art board, although he used digital tools for initial design. It was his first complete issue inking his own pencils. He specifically acknowledged Stephen Platt’s Moon Knight #55 in the cover’s posing and rendering, and Jean Giraud’s influence on its line treatment.
