Artist catalog & profile
Steve Ditko
The co-creator whose clarity, tension, and off-center imagination gave Spider-Man his first visual identity.
Artist Profile
A career in context
Steve Ditko studied at New York’s Cartoonists and Illustrators School under Jerry Robinson after serving in the U.S. Army. He entered professional comics in the 1950s and, at Marvel, co-created Spider-Man and Doctor Strange while establishing a visual language unlike anyone else working in the field.
Ditko died in 2018, but his work remains continuously in print and central to the way Spider-Man is drawn, staged, and understood. Amazing Fantasy #15 is not merely a famous first appearance; it is the compositional source from which an enormous family of later images descends.
CoverLineage noteThe cover’s power comes from narrative compression. Spider-Man, the captive figure, the city, and the declarative copy all tell the reader that a new kind of hero has arrived before the book is opened.
