Artist Profile

A career in context

Steve Bryant is a comic-book writer and illustrator best known for Athena Voltaire, his adventure series about a 1930s aviatrix. He worked as an artist in tabletop role-playing games in the early 1990s before moving into comics; Athena Voltaire launched online in 2002. The webcomic received an Eisner nomination in 2005. His work on the property encompasses writing, drawing and lettering, with collaborators including colorist Jason Millet and editor Chris Murrin.

For the 2014 Athena Voltaire Compendium, published through Sequential Pulp at Dark Horse, Bryant revised the character’s background, rescripted existing pages and drew substantial new material. In an interview he explained that making Athena the daughter of a stage magician helped connect her history to her abilities. His cited influences include classic adventure comic strips and modern action heroines; he also described mixing period adventure with the rhythms of screwball comedy and film noir.

Bryant’s other projects include Ghoul Scouts, an all-ages supernatural adventure created with artist Mark Stegbauer, and Evie and the Helsings with Don Cardenas. The latter combines a monster-hunting inheritance with a protagonist who wants to play rock music. Discussing its creation in 2023, Bryant drew on memories of playing in Midwestern bands in the 1980s and described a collaborative process involving longtime friends. He and Cardenas produced the launch variants themselves, including a tribute to Tim Bradstreet’s Vampire: The Masquerade artwork.

CoverLineage noteAthena Voltaire links Bryant’s own adventure heroine to three source compositions: X-Men #141 in issue #7, ASM129 in issue #8 and Amazing Fantasy #15 in issue #11. The repeated title makes these entries a useful small sequence within his broader career.
