A career in context

Stephanie Hans works across cover illustration, book illustration and sequential comics. Her official studio biography lists clients including Marvel, DC, Disney, ABC, Random House, Penguin Press, Valiant, BOOM! Studios and Dynamite. She describes her approach as digital Impressionism: using colour and composition to suggest reality while giving an image an emotional purpose. That description comes from the artist herself, and places her painting practice within a wider illustration career rather than limiting it to superhero covers.

In 2018, Hans became the co-creator of DIE with writer Kieron Gillen. The Image series brought her painted imagery into sustained sequential storytelling about a fantasy role-playing game and the people drawn into its world. Image identifies the collaboration as a three-time Hugo Award nominee and a British Fantasy Award winner. In a retrospective studio post, Hans recalled having made hundreds of covers before DIE, and described the commitment required to move into a long collaborative comic project.

Hans and Gillen reunited for We Called Them Giants, their first standalone original graphic novel, released by Image in October 2024. The book follows a young woman navigating a largely emptied world and an encounter with enormous beings, with communication central to its premise. Hans is credited for both the interior art and cover. Her studio’s later account of preparing DIE: Loaded describes drawing 140 pages before its first issue appeared, offering a concrete example of the lengthy production work behind her painted sequential books.
