Artist Profile

A career in context

Mike Vasquez is a Southern California artist associated with pop-culture mash-ups and comic-book covers. Amazing Comic Con’s 2019 guest announcement specifically identifies him as a Rick and Morty cover artist for Oni Press, including Pickle Rick material and the Rick and Morty versus Dungeons & Dragons crossover. He also works under the name Mike Goes Geek.

In a first-person interview with The United States of Nerd, Vasquez described moving into full-time illustration after the birth of his first child. He discussed an early baby-clothing project called Lil’ Geeks and subsequent work for companies including Upper Deck, BOOM!, Topps and Cryptozoic. He also identified Godzilla and kaiju as particular interests, placing his cartoon mash-ups within a wider practice of licensed and fan-oriented illustration.

His published comic work includes the alternate cover to Rick and Morty #37, confirmed by the issue’s Oni Press preview credits. Those credits distinguish his cover contribution from the interior art by Marc Ellerby and Rii Abrego. His convention appearances have also included prints, merchandise and commissioned sketches, demonstrating a practice that extends beyond comic covers into collectible illustration.
