Artist Profile
A career in context
Miguel Mercado is an illustrator based in Manila, Philippines, whose professional comic work includes Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Firefly, Over the Garden Wall and Sparrowhawk. In BOOM! Studios’ announcement of a major cover agreement, he recalled that drawing comic covers had been a personal ambition before an invitation to paint a Power Rangers cover made it a professional reality. His artist identity is also associated with the online name merkymerx.
BOOM! announced a twenty-cover agreement with Mercado covering releases through 2021. Its examples included Mega Man: Fully Charged, Seven Secrets and Dune: House Atreides, together with the main cover for Firefly: Watch How I Soar. His Power Rangers assignments developed into themed sequences: BOOM! identifies his Morpher variants, Beyond the Grid helmet covers, Yearbook variants and the civilian-and-Ranger portraits for Go Go Power Rangers. These recurring assignments made his contribution more extensive than a handful of isolated special editions.
In 2022, BOOM! announced Mercado’s first guest-art contribution to the oversized Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #100, expanding his involvement beyond cover illustration. His representative, Next Comic Art, describes his usual process as predominantly digital but also offers traditional drawings and painted works. The gallery includes character illustrations, sketch-cover paintings and original cover work, documenting a physical-art practice alongside the digital paintings associated with his published comics.
CoverLineage noteThe archive follows Mercado’s Darkhawk covers across a consecutive sequence: issue #2 references ASM300, #3 Spider-Man #1 and #4 Hulk #340. Seen together, these editions form a compact example of one character appearing across several source-cover lineages.
