Artist Profile

A career in context

Mark Morales is a professional comic-book inker whose training included animation and cartooning at New York’s School of Visual Arts from 1987 to 1991. His teachers included Will Eisner, Gene Colan, Harvey Kurtzman, Joe Orlando and Irwin Hasen. One early assignment involved restoring damaged artwork by re-inking portions of an older Spirit story for Eisner. After graduation he worked in animation and design studios, developed samples in his spare time and assisted inker Joe Rubinstein.

In a 2014 interview, Morales dated his move into full-time comics to a 1993 Evil Ernie miniseries for Chaos Comics. His Marvel work began with X-Force #49 and included extended collaborations with Adam Pollina and Jim Cheung. He subsequently worked with Olivier Coipel on the 2007 Thor relaunch and contributed to event books including Avengers vs. X-Men, Fear Itself and Infinity. Marvel’s published collection credits also document his work on New Avengers: Illuminati and Infinity; Heroes Reborn #1 credits him inking Ed McGuinness.

Morales describes inking as a drawing discipline that makes penciled storytelling clear before color is added. He has discussed using variations in line weight to establish depth, reading scripts to understand dramatic moments and adjusting his approach to each penciller. His process evolved from predominantly brush work toward controlled crowquill lines. In a later interview he also emphasized process demonstrations as a way to explain the contribution inkers make to finished comic art.

CoverLineage noteMorales is credited here as an inker: with Humberto Ramos on the Wizard Ace ASM129 edition, M. C. Wyman on Hardcase #24 and Clayton Henry on Alpha Flight #9. Those collaborations connect him to ASM129, Amazing Fantasy #15 and X-Men #141 while preserving the separate contributions to each finished cover.
