Artist Profile

A career in context

Leonel Castellani was born in Buenos Aires and studied visual arts at the National University of La Plata. His professional work has crossed comics, illustration and animation rather than following a single superhero specialty. His teaching biography at CRUMB describes assignments as an assistant, colorist and artist for clients including Disney, Warner Bros./DC, Scholastic, Egmont and Planeta, with licensed characters such as Scooby-Doo, Tom and Jerry and the Looney Tunes cast.

Castellani contributed to Image Comics’ David & Goliath in the early 2000s and worked on Disney Afternoon comics including Chip ’n Dale Rescue Rangers and DuckTales for BOOM! Studios. His Marvel assignments included Super Hero Squad comics and design work connected to Super Hero Squad and Avengers animation. He also helped develop character imagery for Marvel’s LEGO projects and illustrated their comic-cover variants. Marvel’s issue records specifically credit his LEGO covers for Superior Spider-Man, Avengers A.I. and Indestructible Hulk.

In a 2017 interview, Castellani traced his early reading to Patoruzú, Patoruzito, Condorito and Mafalda, alongside animated cartoons. He described preferring to handle drawing, inking and coloring himself rather than dividing those tasks among specialists. Discussing licensed work, he explained how he gradually introduced changes to proportions and details while respecting approved character models. That account offers a practical view of his experience balancing an individual drawing approach with the requirements of established entertainment properties.

CoverLineage noteCastellani’s LEGO covers for Superior Spider-Man #19 and Infinity #3 reinterpret Amazing Fantasy #15 and Hulk #340 through toy-character imagery. New Mutants #17 adds a Super Hero Squad version of the X-Men #141 composition.
