Artist Profile

A career in context

Kody Chamberlain is a writer, illustrator and story artist whose work spans comics and screen production. His professional résumé lists assignments for Marvel, DC, Dark Horse, IDW and Image alongside film, television and video-game projects. His creator-owned Sweets: A New Orleans Crime Story follows a homicide detective pursuing a killer before a major hurricane reaches the city. Chamberlain wrote and illustrated the series, using its Louisiana setting as the basis for a locally grounded crime narrative.

Sweets won the 2011 Spinetingler Award for Best Mystery/Crime Comic or Graphic Novel. That year the Acadiana Center for the Arts exhibited the complete sequential story in its Mallia Gallery. Chamberlain described installing all 117 pages with lettering intact, allowing visitors to experience the entire miniseries on the walls. His other major creator-owned collaboration, Punks: The Comic with writer Joshua Hale Fialkov, uses paste-up collage inspired by classic punk flyers. Image collected the first five issues in a 2015 volume.

Chamberlain’s work outside those series includes illustrating Luke McBain for 12 Gauge and Tag for BOOM! Studios. His résumé also documents storyboard work on the crime film Bad Country and conceptual art for the animated Tales of the Black Freighter. For HALO, he worked as writer and artist on “Majestic Poker Night,” featuring Fireteam Majestic. These assignments show a professional practice extending from finished comic pages to the visual planning and development of stories in other media.
