Artist Profile

A career in context

Ken Haeser is a comic-book writer and artist and the co-creator, with Buz Hasson, of The Living Corpse. He trained at the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art. In a 2009 interview, Haeser explained that his enthusiasm for zombies developed into the project through conversations with Hasson: they wanted a different approach from stories that simply repeated the familiar zombie-apocalypse model. Their central character is an undead protagonist with a conscience who confronts supernatural threats.

Dynamite’s collected edition The Living Corpse: Post Mortem brings together the early issues, a zero issue and an annual featuring the characters from Hack/Slash. The series continued in The Living Corpse: Exhumed, for which Dynamite credits Haeser and Hasson as artists. These books establish him as a participant in both creating a horror property and producing its continuing stories, alongside his separate cover assignments.

Haeser’s work also encompasses comedy for younger readers. Dynamite announced him as an interior and cover artist for its 2015 Grumpy Cat comics, alongside Steve Uy and other contributors. The issues feature short stories about Grumpy and her brother Pokey, and the publisher subsequently offered hand-drawn Haeser art on blank covers. Dynamite also identifies him with its Cute Variant cover program. His published work therefore moves between monster-centered stories, licensed character comedy and individualized collectible artwork, rather than being confined to one visual or narrative format.

CoverLineage noteThe Hulk #340 lineage brings together Haeser’s Army of Darkness and KISS/Army of Darkness work with his collaborative Fright Night cover. Garbage Pail Kids: Origins #3 adds the X-Men #141 composition to his catalog, extending the references across horror, music and character comedy.
