Artist Profile

A career in context

Kael Ngu is a Malaysian illustrator and concept artist who studied digital animation at The One Academy. His official career timeline places him at the Malaysian game studio Passion Republic from 2013 to 2017, followed by freelance illustration. Card-game images and game concept art preceded his comic-cover career. His published client list includes Marvel, DC, Image, BOOM! Studios, IDW, Valiant and Dynamite, alongside commissions for private collectors.

Ngu has documented changes in his working methods rather than presenting a single fixed technique. In his retrospective on 2023, he explained that he had stopped using digital inks and was manually inking his illustrations before adding digital color. His commission gallery includes traditional ink-and-marker pieces. In 2025 he released a cover-making tutorial that follows a project from early layout sketches submitted for editorial approval through the finished illustration.

His work also extends to sequential storytelling and publishing. Cyborgs Volume 1 was an interior-art assignment for Soleil that appeared in France in January 2025. Later that year, Ngu published an English edition for the Southeast Asian market with a new cover he drew himself. His 2024 retrospective describes the Killswitch exhibition in Malaysia, organized with artist Hoi Mun, which presented illustrations, original drawings, sculptures, concept work and a short comic introducing that project’s world.

CoverLineage noteNgu’s Venom #26 and The Last Ronin #3 entries revisit ASM300. His Last Ronin #2 cover belongs to the Spider-Man #1 lineage, giving collectors two different McFarlane compositions to compare within the same Turtle story.
