Artist Profile
A career in context
Juan José Ryp is a comic-book artist whose American publishing work includes interiors, cover illustrations and character-design editions. His collaboration with Warren Ellis at Avatar Press produced Black Summer and No Hero, two mature-readers series that examine destructive uses of superhuman power. Avatar’s No Hero announcements explicitly reunite the Black Summer creative team and credit Ryp for both story art and covers. The publisher also offered editions reproducing his initial character designs.
His Avatar assignments extended beyond those superhero stories. He drew Frank Miller’s RoboCop, the comics project adapted by Steven Grant from Miller’s screenplay material. Avatar also commissioned him for wraparound covers for Ellis’s Anna Mercury, pairing the series’ heroine with the fictional setting of New Ataraxia. These credits show his involvement in adaptations, original serial storytelling and the additional images developed for variant editions, not simply isolated cover work.
At Valiant, Ryp worked with Peter Milligan on Britannia, a historical mystery with supernatural horror set in the Roman world. Valiant’s collection identifies him as the artist and also cites his earlier work on Ninjak and Clone. He later partnered with Dan Abnett on the 2019 Rai series, drawing the futuristic cyborg hero’s journey through a transformed Earth. The Rai launch credits him for interior art and both principal cover options. This sequence of projects moves from contemporary violent superhero fiction through historical horror to science fiction, with sustained collaborations across different publishers.
CoverLineage noteNo Hero supplies two different lineage connections: its convention-exclusive first issue revisits ASM129, while its seventh issue’s Auxiliary Edition joins the Spider-Man #1 catalog. Warren Ellis’s Wolfskin adds another Spider-Man #1 reference from Ryp’s Avatar work.
