Artist Profile

A career in context

John Romita Sr. began his comics career with work for Stan Lee’s Atlas operation in 1949, after a period in commercial art. His early assignments included horror and romance stories as well as other genres. He subsequently spent years drawing romance comics for National, the company now known as DC, before returning to Marvel to ink Avengers stories and pencil Daredevil.

Romita became the artist on The Amazing Spider-Man in 1966. His collaboration with Stan Lee followed Steve Ditko’s foundational run and helped establish the visual identity of Peter Parker’s expanding supporting cast. Romance comics were a substantial part of his professional background before Spider-Man, rather than an incidental early credit.

In the early 1970s he moved into Marvel’s art direction and special projects, contributing product illustrations and designs as well as publishing work. He also drew the syndicated Spider-Man newspaper strip beginning in 1977. The Society of Illustrators preserves examples of his newspaper artwork in its permanent collection. Romita died in 2023; his son John Romita Jr. pursued a separate career as a comics artist.

CoverLineage noteRomita’s ink contribution to Gil Kane’s pencils on Amazing Spider-Man #129 connects him to the original source image. The cover’s collaborative credit is preserved in the catalog rather than assigning the complete artwork to either artist alone.
