Artist Profile

A career in context

Joe Shuster (1914–1992) co-created Superman with writer Jerry Siegel. His family moved from Toronto to Cleveland when he was ten, and he met Siegel there. The two collaborated on science-fiction fanzines and local cartoons before attempting to sell Superman as a newspaper strip. Their earlier comics work included Dr. Occult, Slam Bradley and the Radio Squad.

Superman appeared in Action Comics #1, cover-dated June 1938, with Shuster’s car-lifting cover image. The Smithsonian identifies the issue as Superman’s debut and a defining object in the development of superhero comics. Shuster’s original composition is the source image for this catalog; later artists’ reinterpretations should remain distinct from his original credit.

Shuster and his studio continued producing Superman comics with Siegel through 1947. The estate-supported biography published by the Joe Shuster Awards also records his model-sheet work for the Fleischer Superman cartoons. Deteriorating eyesight eventually curtailed his comics career. The Canadian awards bearing his name inducted him into their Hall of Fame in 2005.

CoverLineage noteShuster’s original Action Comics #1 cover is the source composition for this lineage, rather than a later homage. Its central car-lifting figure and surrounding action provide the visual reference for the catalog’s reinterpretations.
