Artist Profile

A career in context

Joe Rubinstein, also credited as Josef Rubinstein, was born in Poland in 1958 and developed his comics career after moving to the United States. As a teenager he worked at Continuity Associates, learning from Neal Adams and Dick Giordano. His official biography recalls practicing inks over photocopies of Mike Nasser’s pencils before editor Gerry Conway assigned him to ink a backup story in Kamandi #45–46. That early opportunity established an ongoing professional partnership with Nasser.

Rubinstein’s best-known projects include the 1982 Wolverine limited series by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller and The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe. For the Handbook, he inked character drawings by numerous pencilers. His account explains that editor Mark Gruenwald valued his ability to preserve the structure of the characters while adapting to different artists’ drawings. Other collaborations in his biography include Michael Golden on Micronauts, Jim Starlin on Warlock and Don Newton on Aquaman, as well as later assignments for DC and Dark Horse.

In his published Q&A, Rubinstein emphasizes collaboration and doing the best possible job with the penciler’s work. He identifies Adams and Giordano as formative influences and describes traditional inking as his established practice, while noting some experimentation with drawing and coloring in Procreate. He also paints outside his comics assignments. The Inkwell Awards recognized his career with the Joe Sinnott Hall of Fame Award in 2016.

CoverLineage noteRubinstein’s Action Comics #1 connections come through inking Ron Frenz on Superman #124 and Dan Jurgens on Superman #136. The records also retain Patrick Martin’s color credit, making the finished covers identifiable as collaborative work.
