Jerry Ordway

Jerry Ordway’s career crosses several creative roles: writing, penciling, inking, and painted illustration. Penguin Random House’s creator biography identifies Superman, Action Comics, Wonder Woman, The Power of Shazam!, Crisis on Infinite Earths, and Infinite Crisis among his best-known projects. These credits place him in both ongoing superhero storytelling and the large continuity events that connect DC’s publishing lines.

His Superman work forms a substantial part of that bibliography. DC’s collected editions continue to credit him alongside collaborators including John Byrne, Marv Wolfman, Roger Stern, and Dan Jurgens. He also illustrated the official comic adaptation of Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman film, working with writer Dennis O’Neil; Ordway discussed that assignment and the demands of adapting a film in a retrospective interview.

The Power of Shazam! provides another important route into his work. DC’s In the Beginning collection credits Ordway as its writer and among its artists, bringing together his involvement in Billy Batson’s world with the contributions of other illustrators. His bibliography therefore includes both individual visual assignments and projects where he helped shape the narrative as a writer.
