Gil Kane

Prolific DC and Marvel penciler and cover artist associated with Green Lantern, The Atom and the original Amazing Spider-Man #129 cover.

Artist Profile

A career in context

Gil Kane (1926–2000) was a major penciler for both DC and Marvel. His work is closely associated with Green Lantern and The Atom at DC, and Amazing Spider-Man at Marvel. Comic-Con’s Hall of Fame biography describes him as Marvel’s principal cover artist during the 1970s and credits him with more than 900 Marvel covers beginning in the late 1960s.

His DC work extended beyond those Silver Age heroes. The Adventures of Superman: Gil Kane collects stories from Superman, Action Comics, Superman Special and DC Comics Presents Annual. That collection documents his handling of the Man of Steel and numerous guest characters, while DC’s Green Lantern and Atom collections preserve other major portions of his career.

Kane supplied the pencils for the original Amazing Spider-Man #129 cover, finished with John Romita Sr.’s inks. The issue introduced the Punisher and the Jackal; its cover credit must be distinguished from Ross Andru’s interior pencils. Kane’s 1997 induction into the Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame recognizes a career encompassing sequential storytelling and an unusually extensive cover bibliography.

CoverLineage noteThe original Amazing Spider-Man #129 cover credits Kane’s pencils and John Romita Sr.’s inks. This original is the source image for the ASM129 lineage; its presence here is distinct from the later homage covers.
