Frank Miller
Writer and artist behind The Dark Knight Returns, Sin City and Ronin, with a career spanning superhero comics, original graphic novels and film.
Artist Profile
A career in context
Frank Miller became a professional comics artist while still in his teens. After assignments for several publishers, his work on Spectacular Spider-Man led to a regular penciling assignment on Daredevil, where he also became the writer. His collaboration with inker Klaus Janson helped establish the Elektra stories that became a central part of that period.
Miller developed Ronin with colorist Lynn Varley and later created The Dark Knight Returns with Janson and Varley. Batman: Year One was a different collaboration: Miller wrote it, David Mazzucchelli illustrated it, and Richmond Lewis supplied the colors. Separating those roles matters when tracing an image back to its original artists.
Beyond superhero comics, Miller created Sin City and 300. Dark Horse dates their debuts to 1991 and 1998 respectively. He also co-directed the 2005 Sin City film with Robert Rodriguez and illustrated Cursed with writer Thomas Wheeler. His official biography records his 2015 induction into the Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame.
