Ed McGuinness

Superhero penciller and cover artist associated with Deadpool, Superman/Batman and the Jeph Loeb Hulk stories that introduced Red Hulk.

Artist Profile

A career in context

Ed McGuinness attracted early attention through Deadpool and Vampirella. DC’s official biography traces his subsequent work on WildStorm’s Mr. Majestic to the monthly Superman series with writer Jeph Loeb, and then to their Superman/Batman collaboration. These projects established an extended association with large-scale superhero stories.

At Marvel, McGuinness reunited with Loeb on Hulk. The publisher credits him as penciller of the January 2008 first issue and identifies that issue as Red Hulk’s first appearance. Marvel’s listings also document his continuing interior and cover contributions through the series, alongside collaborators including inker Dexter Vines and colorist Jason Keith.

Marvel collected examples of his drawing in Marvel Monograph: The Art of Ed McGuinness — Deadpool & His Amazing Friends. His career includes substantial sequential storytelling as well as individual covers. Publisher credit pages are useful for distinguishing those roles: a comic with a McGuinness cover can have interiors by another artist, while a pencilling credit may be finished by a separately credited inker and colorist.
