Artist Profile

A career in context

Dick Giordano (1932–2010) combined a working artist’s career with influential editorial roles. His early professional experience included the Iger studio and freelance work for Charlton, where he advanced to editor-in-chief. At Charlton he helped develop the Action Heroes line and worked with creators including Steve Ditko, Jim Aparo and Denny O’Neil. His subsequent DC career encompassed penciling, inking and editing rather than a permanent move away from the drawing board.

Giordano partnered with Neal Adams in Continuity Associates, a studio that produced advertising and film-related artwork as well as comics. In a 2007 interview, he explained that he handled much of the business administration while maintaining his own art workload. His inking partnerships with Adams became particularly well known. The Inkwell Awards’ career tribute also documents his mentorship of younger artists at the studio, including Michael Netzer, who recalled learning about rendering, textures and storytelling through Giordano’s work and conversations.

Back at DC, Giordano became an editorial leader and mentor to a new generation of staff. Karen Berger’s memorial describes the formative influence he had on her development as an editor. His own retrospective interview reveals the range of his interests: he particularly enjoyed romance work for its opportunities in fashion, design and quieter storytelling, and remembered editing Aquaman with Steve Skeates and Jim Aparo as a rewarding assignment. He was honored by the Inkwell Awards in 2009.

CoverLineage noteAction Comics #484 credits Giordano’s inks over José Luis García-López’s drawing in the Action Comics #1 lineage. Red Sonja #16 adds his own cover credit to the Hulk #340 catalog, representing two distinct kinds of contribution.
