Artist catalog & profile

Dave Sim

Canadian cartoonist and self-publisher behind Cerebus, a 300-issue independent comic whose visual satire and long-form storytelling became central to his career.

Artist Profile

A career in context

Dave Sim co-founded the independent publisher Aardvark-Vanaheim and created Cerebus, which ran from December 1977 to March 2004. Its 300 issues followed a talking aardvark across an increasingly elaborate fictional world. The original series grew from fantasy parody into an extended work incorporating political, religious and literary concerns.

Gerhard joined the production in 1984, contributing the detailed environments associated with much of the series. Their collaboration is an important distinction when discussing Cerebus artwork: Sim’s character drawing and storytelling appeared within settings developed with another artist. The series was also collected in large paperback volumes commonly called phone books by readers.

Sim became a prominent advocate of self-publishing and participated in the development of the Creator’s Bill of Rights in 1988. His later publications included glamourpuss, for which distributor solicitations credit him as both writer and artist. His career therefore encompasses publishing and creator ownership as well as cartooning; Library and Archives Canada also notes that parts of his work express controversial views.
