Artist Profile
A career in context
Dave Johnson is a comic-book artist with a substantial career in cover illustration. His publisher biography describes a childhood move from Pittsburgh to Georgia and an interest in comics renewed by Chris Claremont and John Byrne’s Uncanny X-Men. He identifies Byrne and Michael Golden as influences and studied painting at the Art Institute of Atlanta. His attention then shifted toward illustration and the ability of a single image to communicate information immediately.
Johnson’s most extensive cover assignment was the original 100 Bullets series, for which his representative credits him with all one hundred covers. DC also credits him on its collected editions and the Brother Lono follow-up. His other assignments include Batman, Detective Comics, Deadpool and Superman: Red Son. He won the 2002 Eisner Award for Best Cover Artist. His work is not confined to covers: he also collaborated with Erik Larsen on Superpatriot: Liberty & Justice.
In explaining his approach, Johnson has compared cover illustration to billboard design, where an image must convey its message within seconds. His publisher connects that principle to his preference for direct, simplified compositions. Johnson also helped found Drink and Draw, a gathering of professional artists that led to an art book. His creator-owned credits include co-writing Pop Kill with Jimmy Palmiotti; the collected edition identifies Juan Santacruz as its illustrator and Brian Reber as colorist. That project adds writing and collaboration to a career chiefly recognized through individual cover images.
CoverLineage noteGet Fury #1 and the Punisher vs. Spider-Man #1 foil variant both connect Johnson to ASM129. The pair keeps the Punisher central while revisiting the composition associated with the character’s original debut.
