His own biography describes entering comics at age twenty and developing his work at Valiant under Bob Layton. His subsequent superhero bibliography includes Wonder Woman, Superman, Supergirl, Green Lantern Corps, Batman Beyond, Teen Titans, and X-Men projects.

With writer Gene Luen Yang, Chang co-created Monkey Prince for DC. The character debuted in DC Festival of Heroes: The Asian Superhero Celebration in 2021, drawing on the Monkey King and Journey to the West while establishing a new character within the DC Universe.
