Alex Ross
A painter whose monumental realism helped redefine how superheroes could look on the page—and in the wider culture.
Artist Profile
A career in context
Alex Ross studied at the American Academy of Art in Chicago and found his major breakthrough with Marvels in 1993. Painted in gouache, the series presented Marvel’s heroes from a human point of view and established Ross as a singular presence in mainstream comics.
Kingdom Come, created with Mark Waid, cemented his reputation, followed by projects including Justice, Earth X, and a vast body of covers and character designs. His recent Marvel work includes ongoing cover contributions across Immortal Thor and Mortal Thor, alongside new editions of his landmark books.
CoverLineage noteRoss approaches homage as cultural memory. His realism makes an inherited pose feel less like a quotation from another drawing and more like a photographed event that might have existed all along. Action Comics #1 connections now include Action Comics #900, Action Comics #1050.
